Abstract

Social sharing networks put forward a completely new method through which individuals present and represent themselves. Those virtual tools help a new field of study and interest to emerge in terms of the analysis of personality and identity. In traditional sense, personal portrait, in other words, passport photo has evolved into “selfie (self-image) as new action of taking photos thanks to the development of digital technologies. Disseminating on social media instruments, selfie is more than a simple photo; it is rather a manifestation of an expression, identity and attitude. Social media, which is another dimension of individuals‟ actions to express and realize themselves, in terms of taking selfies, is also a new dimension of individuals‟ behaviour to exhibit themselves. This situation displays variations among age groups that are also called “generations”. This study researches into the relationship between participants‟ attitudes of taking selfies and their narcissistic tendencies by using statistical methods. The findings of the study consist of two parts in which participants voluntarily answered related questions on an online survey tool. The first part is about a total of randomly selected 574 participants‟ attitudes of taking selfies. The second part is about Narcissistic Personality Inventory (known as NKE-16). The study results show that participants who share selfies they took are actually doing this to attract attention and raise interest as a part of narcissistic behaviour. The results were also discussed in the final part of the study.
