Abstract
Shah Kulu Khan, the ruler of Nakhichevan and Revan with the title of Safavid ambassador, came to Istanbul to congratulate Sultan Selim II’s enthronement and condolence for Suleiman the Magnificent in 1567. The delegation stayed in Istanbul for three days and then came to Edirne due to the fact that Selim II was in Edirne for wintering. The acceptance of Shah Kulu and accompanying delegation took place in Saray-ı Cedid-i Amire. The delegation stayed in Edirne until they were accepted and returned to audience. Shah Kulu’s visitation has very important role in terms of determining the Ottoman–Safavid relations during Selim II period. With this visit, the Safavid Emperor Shah Tahmasb tried to influence the Ottoman Empire with the rich gifts he sent. In response to this, the Ottoman Empire tried to entertain the ambassador delegation in the best way. With this visit of the ambassador delegation, the Amasya treaty made during the Suleiman the Magnificent period was re-approved and the peace between Ottoman and Safavid was continued during the reign of Selim II.
