Abstract

This study aims to examine the metaphorical perceptions of pre-service English teachers on English grammar teaching. Participants of the study consist of 52 pre-service teachers attending the Department of English Language Teaching (ELT) at Trakya University in the 2020-2021 academic year, and they were selected by convenience sampling method. Participants were asked the question ‘English grammar teaching is like......, because....’ after they had micro-teaching experience on grammar teaching. The metaphors were compared and analyzed by content analysis method. A total of 31 valid metaphors were generated in line with the data gathered, and these metaphors were defined and classified under three conceptual themes. The results of the study revealed that pre-service English teachers perceived grammar teaching as a phenomenon involving interrelated subjects, being necessary and facilitated by practice. In this sense, the results of the study revealed that it would be effective to support theoretical courses on grammar teaching by practice in the current ELT programs.
