Abstract
In the work it is aimed to study about stone work in all aspects. With this aim we made an investigation and interview with eight candid people who are working in this field. Besides, we have conducted a quationaire with 30 people about demographical aspects of the field, health problems, labor accidents which they are encountering while working. It is mentioned in the study about production stages, the tools they are using and all these study corroborated with pictures. Ahlat stone which has an important role in Ahlat architecture in the past and present day is occurs from the volcanic ash by the Mount Nemrut. Ahlat stone is generally used for constructions or as a grave stone. For example head stone or a grave itself. Moreover it is widely used for mosque and its minarets. Ahlat Stones is digged out of a primitive quarries from the skirts of Mount Nemrut then sent to process and put the Stones into use. While its process, Stones can be shaped smoothly with machines but in order to give an circle shape stone master must stroke or use basic tools. Stone carving with hands esspecially used for construction of minarets of mosques in times. Limited workmen carving the Stones according to its origin and carved stones mostly used for graves. In the research, the quarries where the Ahlat stone is digged out and processed has no stock problem, it is easy to find metarial itself. But the unconscious management and primitive working techniques makes digging the huge stone blocks difficult. It is vital to employee professional staffs and companies in order to use stone deposits economically.
