Abstract

One of the significant treaties related with the Turkish-Russian relations is the Moscow Treaty, signed in March 16th, 1921. The troublesome period of the two states and situation of the Caucasus, held in the treaty, increased its significance. Turkey and Russia aimed to assure their borderlines mutually. In this paper, the determination process of the north-east border of Turkey in Moscow Treaty according to the archival documents of the Soviet Russia is evaluated in detail. It is thought that it would give a chance to the researchers who want to make comparative studies on the issue with, also, using the Turkish archival documents. The works related with the issue are based on the Turkish documents but the Russian diplomatic documents, which were published in 24 volumes, are not used.

The Russian documents, used in this works help to figure out how the Russian delegation prepared to the negotiations and how they reacted to the new developments. Also, these documents helped us to figure out that Russia, the protector of the Armenia, took the Azerbaijan’s side while determining the borderline and supported Nahcivan to remain as a part of Azerbaijan. It could be thought that the new established Russian state behaved in the same way with Turkey, because it needed allies in the international arena and wanted to spread its communist ideology. In the paper, the mountains, valleys, plains and the settlements on the north-east borderline of Turkey are figured out with the help of the Russian documents.
